Peru's primary international and domestic airport is situated in Callao, seven miles from Lima's historic center. Also known as the Lima International Airport, the Jorge Chávez International Airport has become an important hub for airlines serving Latin America thanks to its strategic location on the central western coast of South America. In fact, it is among America's best-connected airports and serves as the primary base for South America's cargo industry. Skytrax World Airport Awards awarded it the title of South America's best airport in 2005, 2009 and 2010.
Lima's first airport was the Limatambo Airport of the San Isidro district, which was shut down in 1960 due to lack of space. That same year the Lima-Callao International Airport began operations and in 1965 was renamed the Jorge Chávez International Airport after French-Peruvian aviation pioneer Jorge Chávez Dartnell, the first man to cross the Alps in a monoplane in 1910.
Today the airport offers travelers a full range of services and conveniences, including a shopping center with gyms and spas, a food court, VIP lounges, transportation services and an on-site hotel with direct access to the main terminal. Getting to other hotels in Lima and Callao is as easy as arranging taxi service at one of the booths in the arrivals area.
