Muyuna Amazon Lodge
Hotel Description
Designed, built and run by local villagers, the Muyuna Amazon Lodge is a paragon of socially and environmentally responsible tourism. It lies deep in the jungle along the Yanayacu River and consists of traditional rainforest bungalows on stilts. The open-air bungalows are sealed with mosquito netting and contain between two and six beds each. There is a private bathroom with a shower, flush toilet and wash basin in each one, as well as a balcony with river or jungle views where guests can relax on the hammock. The large communal room is another pleasant place to rest in a hammock, play a boardgame or foosball match, or socialize with fellow travelers. The lodge doesn't have electricity, so all the bungalows and walkways are lit with kerosene lamps, lending the place an aura of enchantment when the sun goes down. Guests will be able to charge their camera batteries at certain times, however.
The best part about staying at the Muyurina Amazon Lodge is the great number and variety of exciting activities guests can participate in nearby. Day and night walks for spotting animals and medicinal plants, visits to authentic local communities, trips in handmade canoes, swimming with river dolphins, camping out deep in virgin rainforest (equipment provided), fishing for piranha and many other opportunities are available. The experienced guides, many of whom grew up nearby, speak very good English and will astound you with their encyclopedic knowledge of Amazonian flora and fauna. Specialized excursions for physicians, birdwatchers, biologists, etc. can be arranged, as well as one-on-one guided tours. A maximum of four excursions per full day is possible, while the days of arrival and departure allow for as many as two. One guided excursion is included in the price of accommodations.
