Hidden amidst the pulsing ecosystem of the Andean cloud forests is the Ulcumano Ecolodge—one of Peru's most unique mountain getaways. This self-sustaining establishment is situated on nearly 200 acres of picturesque land, which the owner's have turned into an area for conservation and reforestation.
There are six cabin-style lodges available for all-year use, built entirely with wood from a forest plantation as to not impact the primary forest area. Each unit has a private bathroom with hot running water and features gorgeous wood sinks that are hand-made by the Yanesha community. Complimentary biodegradable soap and shampoo in recyclable packaging is provided by the hotel.
Guests will enjoy comfortable beds and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. Each cabin is also equipped with a large private porch overlooking the forest. Ninety per cent of the energy consumed on this property is clean, due in large part to the use of candles instead of electric lighting. In and around the main structure is where the restaurant, bar, BBQ facilities, a library, and plenty of loungers and hammocks can be found.
Guided excursions across the grounds are free-of-charge for guests of the lodge. Over 100 species of native birds call this area home, including the yellow-scarfed tanager, the green and white hummingbird, the Peruvian wren, the chestnut-crowned antpitta, and the inca flycatcher.
Giant ferns, flowers in the brightest colors and most unique shapes, and various towering trees line the many trails the wind through the forest. Visiting the natural caves of the mountain is a great way to spend the day.
Adventures in tree climbing, zip-lining through the canopy, waterfall repelling, mountain biking and more can be booked through the hotel for an additional fee.
