Hotel Plaza Grande
Within the walls of an extravagant colonial building right in front of the main plaza of Quito's Old Town is the Hotel Plaza Grande, one of the oldest hotels in the capital of Ecuador Blending right in with the baroque and neoclassical architecture of the city's historic center, the mansion was once owned by one of Quito's founders, Juan Díaz de Hidalgo hailing from Spain. From its beginning as Majestic Hotel in 1943, the hotel evolved into an office building before undergoing thorough renovations to become the first-class option for accommodations that it is today.
Bringing guests back to when Quito was a Spanish colony through touches of the past such as drapes and wooden furniture, 15 carefully decorated and luxurious suites offer individually controlled air conditioning, a personal safe, noise reduction windows, minibar, jacuzzi, hypoallergenic pillows and duvets, television with cable channels and free Wi-Fi. Four of the suites afford views of the central square. Of these rooms is the Presidential Suite, which is similar to an apartment with a living room, kitchen, dining room, two TVs, and most impressively, three balconies facing the Plaza de la Independencia.
Guests can relax at the spa, which provides a full range of treatments such as massages, facials, waxing and body therapies. Other health facilities include a fitness center and sauna, and additional services include a valet, limousine and 20-minute horse-drawn carriage rides in the evenings. With views of the plaza, the fancy San Francisco Salon or Plaza Grande ballroom are available for meetings and events, and may come with coffee, snacks, cocktails, champagnes and a cigarette bar.
