Chakana Mountain Lodge
11,483 feet above sea level in the Andean village of Putre lie the private cabins of the Chakana Mountain Lodge. Founded by a pair of German and Austrian friends and managed by a German-Chilean married couple, the hotel is an excellent base for exploring Lauca National Park and trekking on the Andean altiplano in the midst of spectacular snowcapped peaks. It is a quiet place half a mile from the center of town where guests can enjoy total privacy and contact with nature. Each cabin features a feather bed, bathroom, heater, cozy reading nook and Wi-Fi. There is a wood stove in the common area where guests can coordinate excursions through the mountains and national parks with options including 4x4 and van rentals, chauffeurs and local guides. The hotel staff speak German, Spanish, English and French.
Next to and part of the hotel there is a living museum devoted to the Aymara culture conceived as a point of encounter between travelers and the local Aymara people. It features a library, language classes, theatrical presentations, concerts and movies.
The hotel is located in the town of Putre on the high Andean plateau (altiplano) at 11,483 feet above sea level. At the gateway to Lauca National Park and near thermal springs, pre-Hispanic petroglyphs and the lofty peaks of Parinacota and Pomerape, the hotel offers diverse trekking opportunities. And since it lies half a mile from the center of town it is a quiet and restful place surrounded by native plants and wildlife.
